Our Mission
The Los Alamos Council on Cancer strives to increase public awareness of cancer and promotes early diagnosis and treatment.
The Council sponsors symposia featuring local, regional, and national specialists; workshops for medical staff and the public; and participation in the annual Los Alamos Health Fair.
The Council sponsors two symposia per year when guest speakers address a timely topic on cancer. The seminars are offered to everyone at no charge and provide continuing education credit to local nurses.
The Council also contributes to the Los Alamos Mesa Public Library Gift Fund in order to allow the library to update and expand its collection of books on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. We also donate to the Family Strengths Network to allow them to fund books on cancer and family issues.
We distribute literature and resources in booklet form at the Los Alamos County Health Fair. The Council in cooperation with the Los Alamos Heart Council and the Los Alamos Medical Center, has subsidized PSA screening since 2004 at the Health Fair for those men who wish to take advantage of the program.
The Council is a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation, registered with the New Mexico Corporation Commission, and a member agency of the Northern New Mexico/Los Alamos United Way.
We serve the communities of Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and northern Santa Fe counties, and the Jemez.
